In this article, I’m taking you to the nostalgic wedding memory of my husband and I that took place at Neilson Hays Library, Bangkok. This wedding was the blissful beginning of Wonders & Weddings. Our whole timeline was newly designed with humanist ceremony and personal details. So the experience was unique and impressive for our guests and our families.
Start With the Wedding Vision
The idea of redesigning the wedding timeline came from our desires to celebrate our wedding in a special way. We wanted everyone we loved to be there. The wedding must represent who we were from the moment our guests walked into the venue to when they went through beautiful pictures they took at home. We wanted them to remember the feelings of happiness and love.
These feelings were unfortunately rare from the previous weddings we had attended. Most of them had the exact same, predictable timeline. Many included the VIP guests who weren’t really related to the couples but somehow got to share their speeches, often about themselves. We didn’t want any of that to happen to us. If someone would be speaking, that would be people we loved. On the wedding day our best friends shared their feelings. The guests we invited into our small celebration were people who genuinely cared for us.
Wedding at Neilson Hays Library
The venue played an important role for our wedding as it determined the livelihood and the convenience. It was the first service we booked. We chose Neilson Hays Library from our shared love of reading as book lovers and as admirers of this beautiful, unique space.
Inside the library went well with our vintage-style reception. We both met at a swing dancing class, where people often dressed up like they were in the 30s-50s. There was also a half-moon gallery inside that we shared some couple pictures and personal vintage decorations.
As a Thai-German couple, we took pride in our hospitality and great food. Every guest had their own seat at the long tables. The food we served was diverse and plenty. We used the catering service by Charm Catering who had experiences providing their services at our venue. Everyone was impressed with the food from savory dishes to desserts.
Redesign the Wedding Timeline
Besides the speeches from our best friends, we also had two other activities we wanted to include in minds. One was the Thai traditional blessing ceremony. The other was swing dancing, which was the unique story of our relationship.
Out of all the sequences in the Thai traditional wedding ceremony, I found the blessing ceremony to be my most favorite. During the time, we got to speak with all of our families and friends face-to-face. The ceremony was simplified with more modern elements with repurposed flower arrangement by Wildflora Studio. And this happened as a surprise for our evening reception.
We also wanted our guests to enjoy the fun from swing dancing like we did. So we invited our friends from Bangkok Swing to help teaching basic steps. Then we both had our first dance with “The Living Room Routine” – our favorite scene from The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Families and friends came in to join the floor along with live jazz music from The Day Thailand. They totally nailed their impressive performance.
Throughout the event, our guests could use a Polaroid camera to take fun pictures and share them with our wedding hashtag #scheelwedance. This phrase came from the movie Shall We Dance and my husband’s family name Scheel.
Capture Feelings with Candid Photography
In our own style, we loved seeing the pictures being taken the exact moment they happened. We didn’t have a photo backdrop and hours of group pictures. Instead, we trusted our two teams of photographers to use their own judgments.
The first team was Coffee Photo, whose works I have been following even before being engaged. I love his style of storytelling photography that reflects genuine feelings and emotions.
The other team was Dewy Photo. I found her shortly before the wedding. Her style is warm, unique, and matches perfectly with our vintage vibes. So we decided to hire her too. The pictures we received were incredibly nostalgic.
Our Happy Wedding Memories
I wrote this blog post today because it’s our anniversary. Anytime I looked back to this wedding reception, the memories always gave me instant happiness. Because it was truly ours. We decided on every little detail with our hearts. The timeline was redesigned to tell our unique story like we wanted. Our friends and families also shared amazing feedbacks.
Even though this reception was entirely different from what my families knew, and there were some misunderstanding during the planning, the entire effort was so worth it. When my parents finally experienced what we wanted to offer them, they were very happy and even surprised. This is the alternative solution I want to offer to modern couples who seek balance between the desires of your own and your families.
If you can see your wedding as a true-to-style, meaningful, memorable event for you and your guest, I will be very happy to serve you as your humanist wedding planner. My services include taking care of your personal wedding elements and designing your unique wedding timeline.
