From Disney’s animated film in 1998 to the thriving character that Asian women and LGBTQ+ community wholeheartedly have been admiring from our childhood. Wonders & Weddings together with Bangkok-based vendors created this Mulan inspired wedding styled shoot. Our color palette includes red, blush, gold, and jade, which reflect happiness, love, prosperity, and harmony.
With this styled shoot, our team presents you the tales of our resilient industry. From how we adapt with the world amid Covid-19, redefine values in weddings, to how we support political movements for our fundamental rights.
Modified Humanist Ceremony
With restrictions and risk assessment in places, wedding couples decide to forgo the full-on conservative values. Humanist weddings are now the alternatives of freedom and personalized experiences. Couples may choose to combine and modify cultural traditions, like this gift-giving ceremony, into the non-religious setting. This is the perfect solution to honor their families and make the wedding memorable and meaningful in their own ways.
Traditionally, these gifts are prepared differently from the families of the bride and the groom. For LGBTQ+ weddings, we have even numbers of all items to represent equality in the relationship of both brides.
Unconventional Bridal Elegance
At this point, modern brides have moved on from the white, shiny princess ball gowns to the attires, makeup, and hair that reflect their personalities. Couples prefer venues that offer both outdoor and indoor areas. Rental services and creative floral designs are in the game. They give just the right amount of the decorations needed for the stylish, eco-friendly, and instagrammable celebrations.
Representation of LGBTQ+ Weddings
Mulan and Li Shang are the two important leading figures for Asian women and LGBTQ+ community. Therefore, we want to emphasize LGBTQ+ representation in this shoot. Our two brides are a real-life same-sex couple. While the legalization of equal marriage in Thailand is in process, we want to make sure that LGBTQ+ couples can vision themselves despite the hetero-focused images of the industry. And support you to celebrate your love with the weddings you so deserve.
Ambitious Team Members
With effects from Covid-19, wedding couples have been experiencing with so many more changes and emotional challenges than ever before. The ways we plan wedding, and also this styled shoot, have changed a lot from in-person to various online platforms and video calls. During the planning, it wasn’t easy to put together the whole team as most businesses were occupied with postponements from spring and summer. However, the remaining members of the team push through together until we found all the like-minded people. And we finally made this Mulan-inspired wedding happen. New Values in the Society
Having Mulan as an inspiration of this shoot is our attempt to reclaim our childhood role models and stand against the violations of human rights that come with the live action movie. We also added umbrellas in our shoot as they became one of the recent symbols of Thai people’s movements from an incident on 16 October 2020.
In this evening, unarmed citizens – mostly high school and university students – used umbrellas to protect each other as Thai polices used water cannon mixed with chemicals and tear gas against them to disperse their peaceful demonstration.
Our styled shoot team members stand with the demonstrators. We believe in freedom of speeches, equal marriage law, and the society that values respect and equal rights.
