Finding LGBTQ+ Friendly Vendors in Thailand

Let’s talk about LGBTQ+ friendly vendors in Thailand. I believe you may have heard how our country is open and supportive towards LGBTQ+ community. You may have met, worked with, or came across many people who consider themselves as LGBTQ+ and feel totally comfortable being who they are.

But the truth is: the discrimination against LGBTQ+ community still exists. We don’t even have equal marriage law yet by the time I published this post (November 2020).

If you decide to have an LGBTQ+ wedding in Bangkok or other provinces in Thailand, it’s important that you read this post first. I’m sharing some tips with you on how to find LGBTQ-inclusive vendors for your memorable wedding day with the love of your life.

What is an LGBTQ+ Friendly Vendor?

In general, these are the wedding vendors that will be happy to work with LGBTQ+ couples and accommodate your needs to make your wedding day come to life. They have shared values of gender equality, will respect and accept you and your partner as who you are. These vendors will not treat you differently than they would hetero couples, but they will help you with different challenges you have while planning your wedding.

Things to Look For in Their Channels

Before making an inquiry, you may look at different things from the vendors you are interested to work with. If they list on Google Business, you can check for an “LGBTQ-friendly” batch on their profile. They will talk openly about gender equality, equal marriage, and feature their works with LGBTQ+ wedding couples on various platforms, such as website and social media. In some case, they may also have a special section for LGBTQ+ clients.

The images used in this blog post came from a wedding styled shoot with equal-minded wedding vendors and real-life LGBTQ+ couple. You can check out the full vendor list at the end of the article.

Questions for LGBTQ+ Friendly Vendors

Since Thailand still doesn’t have an equal marriage law, many LGBTQ+ couples decide to have their weddings in private. For this reason, the representation of LGBTQ+ couples in the wedding industry is rare, even if many vendors and venues are happy to work with you.

If you don’t see any messages or images of LGBTQ+ couples from your wedding vendors, but are still interested to work with them, it’s best to ask certain questions upfront. So that you get to work with those who value equality as much as you do.

Questions you can ask vendors and venues:

  • How long have you been working as (fill their role)?
  • Have you ever worked in LGBTQ+ weddings or with LGBTQ+ couples?
  • Will you be happy to work with LGBTQ+ couples?
  • What do you think about equal marriage law in Thailand?
  • Do you have any trainings or educations on LGBTQ-inclusive weddings?
  • How do you support gender equality through your business?
  • What are the resources you have to learn about LGBTQ+ community?
  • What do you think will be the different challenges in LGBTQ+ weddings? And how will you prepare to support the couples?

Getting Help from Wedding Planner

While there is nothing wrong about asking these questions to the vendors you are inquiring, I understand that some of you may not feel comfortable to discuss the details by yourself for personal reasons. And there is nothing wrong with that too.
